Quinnipiac jumped on the board first at the 15:22 mark of the first period. Breehan Polci (London, Ontario) scored her first collegiate goal as she skated the puck from the left side to face the net and ripped a high shot into the left corner. Senior Evelina Husar (Eskilstuna, Sweden) earned her first point of the season on the assist to Polci.
With two minutes remaining in the first, Quinnipiac struck again to boost the lead to 2-0 on a power play opportunity. Sophomore Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) fired a shot that sailed across the face of the net where freshman Heather Hughes (Stoufville, Ontario) was positioned. Hughes snapped the puck into the upper left corner for her first collegiate goal. The assist was Wheeler's first of the season and fourth of her career.
The Pioneers responded at the 14:53 mark of the second period. Katie Dunlop took a hard shot from the left faceoff circle that ricocheted in off the upper right post for the score. The goal was assisted by Brittany Hartman.
The Bobcats opened and closed the third period with two unassisted goals from freshman Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.). Lyons goal came at the 1:58 mark when she intercepted a pass off a Sacred Heart defender in between the faceoff circles and fired a low shot in between the goalie's pads. The goal was the first of her career. Dymarczyk capitalized on an empty net opportunity with five seconds remaining in the game. The defender ripped a shot from the Bobcat defensive zone that zipped into the net for her first collegiate goal and point.
Quinnipiac goaltenders Amanda Nagel (Greenwood, Minn.) and Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) split time in net and recorded ten saves apiece. Pioneers' netminder Emily Siira made 37 saves in the game.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday, Oct. 4, when they take on the University of New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
