QU Women's Golf Finishes Day One At 2014 Delaware State Spring Invitational

DOVER, Del. – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team completed the first round of the 2014 Delaware State Spring Invitational on Saturday afternoon, a 36-hole tournament hosted by the Hornets at the Maple Dale Country Club.

Overall, Quinnipiac finished the afternoon in third place with a team score of 349. The Bobcats trail in-state rival Hartford by three strokes for second place overall as they head into the final day of the invitational on Sunday. Towson is currently in first place overall with a team score of 336.  Fellow MAAC opponent, Fairfield, finished the day with an overall team score of 364.

"We had a great day at the Delaware State event," head coach John O'Connor said. "It was a chilly windy day, but it wasn't too bad. The girls played considerably better than they did last week in North Carolina."

Sophomore Jenn Whaley (Farmington, Conn.) finished day one as the top finisher for Quinnipiac. The second year Bobcat finished the day with a score of 81. Whaley was tied with Towson's Krissy Unger for best score of the day. Whaley shot 41 on the front nine and improved as she shot 40 on the back nine.

"Obviously Jenn Whaley was the highlight as she is tied for first with major improvements. She is really on her way to being the golfer that I expect her to be," said O'Connor.

Freshmen Nicole Scola (Westerly, R.I.) and Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) finished day one tied for the second best score for Quinnipiac. The pair each finished with an 88 for the day which was tied for 13th best finish for day one.

"Nicole Scola is still getting used to spring golf in college and shot an 88. I expect big improvement from her tomorrow. It's tough for these girls to get used to college golf. I am not concerned, our goal is our conference tournament and we are getting better every day. The conditions are getting better and our game is getting better," stated O'Connor.

Alexa Gentile (Avon, Conn.) finished the day with a 92 while Jennifer Forlenza (Wayne Hills, N.J.) completed her day by shooting a 93.

"I am very pleased with Alexa's 92 and Jenn Forlenza shot a 93. We are looking forward to a better day tomorrow. We are in the final group. All in all it was a pretty good day and I am very pleased with where we are going and the track that we are on," said O'Connor.

Quinnipiac will tee-off on Sunday, April 6th at 10 am for the final day of the Delaware State Spring Invitational in Dover, Del.
