Women's Golf In Fourth Place After First Day Of Northeast Conference Championship

Quinnipiac freshman Krissy Unger (New York, N.Y.) finished in second place on the first day of the Northeast Conference Championship, while the Bobcats finished in fourth place out of the 11 team field after the tournament's first 18 holes at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Bobcats, as a team, shot a program-best 318, breaking the previous record of 324 after the first round of the Rutgers Invitational earlier this spring.

"This is really the first day that we've played in nice weather," head coach John O'Connor said. "We're on a very high note, we really played well. All of the practice we've had paid off. Krissy Unger played unbelievable well. Jenn Whaley shot an 81, and if not for a few tough holes would have came away with a very low score."

Unger trailed the leader, Fairleigh Dickinson's Mariana Juaristi, by two strokes as her first-day 73 (+1) was also a program record. Unger's score bests classmate Jenn Whaley's (Farmington, Conn.) 76 at the Dartmouth Invitational. After opening the day, on hole No. 10, with consecutive pars, Unger shook off back-to-back bogies on holes 12 and 13 to pull even with a pair of birdies. Unger finished the back nine with a 37 (+1). On the front nine, she parred the first five holes before a birdie on six. A bogey on eight left her even on the front nine.

"Clearly, we're the surprise on the leaderboard," O'Connor said. "We hope to continue this and play well tomorrow."

Whaley responded after what has been a surprising spring after a promising fall season. Whaley's produced her best score of the spring with an 81 (+9). Whaley bogeyed four holes on the back nine before a birdie on the first hole of the front nine. A triple bogey plagued her on the fourth hole before shooting par on three of the final five holes. Whaley finished the first day tied for 20th out of 54 NEC golfers.

Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, N.Y.) produced her best career score with an 82 (+10) for the afternoon, good for a tie of 23rd place with Bobcats' captain Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba). Lambrou's best round entering the conference tournament was an 85 on the second day of the Quinnipiac Invitational.  Lambrou birdied hole 13 before bogeying 14 and shooting par on the next three holes. She also birdied hole No. 1 and was cruising before a triple bogey on the eighth hole.

Ketcheson started the day with pars on eight of her first nine holes, with a double bogey on No. 12 as the only blemish on the back nine for the Bobcats' captain. A tough day on the front nine produced a +8 on the nine holes, giving her a +10, 82 for the day. Angelica Muscatelli (No. Providence, R.I.) finished the day with an 89 (+17). Muscatelli's day was highlighted by a birdie on hole No. 5.

Quinnipiac will resume play with middle-18 holes of the 54-hole tournament on Saturday, Apr. 27 at 10 a.m.
