Women’s Basketball Falls to Iona in Home Finale, 80-72
HAMDEN, Conn. – Despite 26 points from Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and 23 points from Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.), the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped by way of an 80-72 loss to Iona College at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 18-11 overall and 13-6 in league play.
The Bobcats and Gaels shot very evenly in the first half, with the Bobcats holding a slight edge in shooting percentage. Quinnipiac shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) in the first half while Iona shot 45.2 percent (14-31). The Gaels however held a major advantage from behind the arc. The Gaels went 8-for-16 from behind the three point line while Quinnipiac went 3-for-9 for beyond the arc.
Quinnipiac and Iona traded baskets in the first half with neither team being able to build a lead larger than five over the first 19 minutes. With three seconds left in the half Aaliyah Robinson gave Iona their largest lead of the half with a three pointer as the Gaels would head into the locker rooms with a 38-31 lead.
Iona opened the second half on a 15-6 run as they started to build a double digit lead. The Gaels would build their lead to 14 with 12 minutes to go in the half, but the Bobcats would claw their way back into the game. Quinnipiac used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the Iona lead to six.
The Bobcats were able to make it a one point game with five minutes to go, but they were not able to get over the top. Iona closed the last five minutes on a 16-9 run as they went on to up their conference record to 18-1 and capture at least a share of the MAAC regular season title.
The Gaels outshot the Bobcats 48.4 percent (15-for-31) to 38.2 percent (13-for-34) in the second half. Joy Adams scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the half. She finished with 14 points and 18 rebounds.
McQuain and Martin chipped in with 16 second half points each as they combined for 32 of Quinnipiac's 41 second half points. McQuain went 5-for-7 in the half and also went 6-for-6 from the line in the second half. Martin went 5-for-13 in the second half as well as 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
Quinnipiac's regular season finale takes place on Saturday, March 1 at Manhattan College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Draddy Gymnasium.
