Quinnipiac Women's Basketball Downs Rider, 54-44
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Paced by a 14-2 run to start the second half, the Quinnipiac Bobcats defeated the Rider Broncs, 54-44, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J. Quinnipiac held Rider to 16.7 percent shooting in the second half and held the second leading scorer in the conference, MyNeshia McKenzie, to just seven points. The Bobcats, winners in four straight games now, improve to 12-8 overall including a 7-3 mark in MAAC play while Rider drops to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Rider held the advantage to start off the first half. With 7:28 left McKenzie gave the Broncs their largest and only double-digit lead of the game with a free-throw. Quinnipiac would close the half on a 16-6 run.
Both teams headed into the locker room tied at the half, 30-30. McQuain was the leading scorer at the break with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting and would go 4-for-4 from the line.
The Bobcats picked it up defensively to start the second half. Quinnipiac began the half scoring six straight points in the first three minutes. Over the first 11:13 of the second half the Bobcats would go on an 18-2 run. The Bobcats would maintain the double digit lead until there was 50 seconds remaining in the game. Ellen Cannon (West Chester, Pa.) and Maria Napolitano (Cincinnati, Ohio) would close out the game for Quinnipiac by adding a pair of free throws each.
In the second half, Quinnipiac held the advantage in points in the paint (16-10) and bench points (12-6). Quinnipiac held Rider to 6-for-36 from the field in the second half after holding the Broncs to 9-for-25 from the field in the first half. Quinnipiac moves to 3-0 all-time against Rider after sweeping the season series.
Quinnipiac will return to Hamden on Sunday when they host in-state rival Fairfield at 1 PM at the TD Bank Sports Center.
