Women's Basketball Downs Rider, 71-59

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior forward Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) paced the Bobcats offense on Friday evening as the Quinnipiac women's basketball team picked up its third conference win of the season with a 71-59 win over Rider at the TD Bank Sports Center. Quinnipiac, now winners in four of its last five games, improved to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC.

McQuain finished with a double-double on the strength of 22 points and a career high 18 rebounds. She went 9-for-20 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line. McQuain had eight points and 10 rebounds in the first half alone.

Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) finished with 13 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting. Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) had 10 points and five rebounds while Camryn Warner (Keene,NH) finished with seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals on the day. Gillian Abshire (Washington, DC) upped her MAAC leading 7.2 assists per game average with nine helpers to go alongside five rebounds and three points.

The Bobcats dominated down low in the first half outscoring the Broncs 22-8 in the paint. Quinnipiac also had a 14-2 bench scoring advantage over Rider in the first half. Despite the disparities, Quinnipiac only held a seven point edge at the half.

Quinnipiac shot 50 percent from the field in the second half. The Bobcats also went 3-7 from beyond the arc. Quinnipiac outscored Rider in the paint 24-16 and held a 12-6 bench scoring advantage in the second half.

Rider was able to take their first lead since the 4:42 mark of the first half with 16:36 remaining in regulation, after MyNeshia McKenzie hit a three to put the Broncs up 35-34. Rider would hold the lead for only 20 seconds though as the Bobcats would go on a 12-0 run over the next 3:48.

After a Rider free throw with 12:35 left, Quinnipiac posted an 11-2 run over the next 3:53 to put the Bobcats ahead 57-38. Rider was able to cut the Quinnipiac lead to 11 with a McKenzie free throw with 4:52 remaining, but that would be the closest that the Broncs would get for the rest of the second half.

McQuain went 6-for-9 from the field in the second half scoring 14 points and bringing down eight rebounds. Guastella had eight points, two rebounds, and two blocks in the second half.

With the loss, Rider fell to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in league play. McKenzie led all Broncs with 22 points and six rebounds.

Quinnipiac improved to 2-0 all-time against Rider. The Bobcats outlasted Rider in the championship game of the Brown Bear Classic last year.

Quinnipiac returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Jan. 5 at Fairfield. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
