QUEENS, N.Y. – St John's was victorious in a non-conference match-up in Queens,N.Y., defeating Quinnipiac, 76-66. Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, NJ) were both a rebound shy of a double double. McQuain finished with 14 points and nine rebounds while Guastella finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Aaliyah Handford was St. John's leading scorer with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.
With nine rebounds on the night McQuain pushed her career total to 827, which moved her into a tie for 5th place in school history alongside Kim Misiasek '01. Gillian Abshire (Washington, DC) finished in double figures for the third consecutive game with 14 points. Camryn Warner (Keene, NH) finished just shy of double figures with nine points.
The Bobcats held the advantage down low to start the first half, but were unable to put a hold on Handford, the 2013 All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Rookie of the Year. Handford went 7-for-8 from the field in the first half and had 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the half.
McQuain, Guastella, and Warner combined for 16 of Quinnipiac's 27 points in the first half. However, Quinnipiac trailed at the intermission, 36-27.
In the second half, with 8:23 left, St. John's was able to build their largest lead of the game as they took a 61-44 lead. The Bobcats were able to cut that lead down to single digits three minutes later when they forced three turnovers and scored on three consecutive possessions.
Handford scored to put St. John's lead back to double digits with 3:11 left. Quinnipiac cut the lead to single digits with 2:41 left, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Quinnipiac falls to 1-3 on the season and return home after a three game road trip on Saturday, Nov. 23 against American University at 2 PM.
