HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac head coach Tricia Fabbri couldn't have dreamed of a better start to the 2013-14 women's basketball season. The Bobcats welcomed North Carolina A&T to Hamden for the opening round of the Preseason WNIT, and handed the Aggies a 77-63 win to advance to the second round of competition. Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) led all players with 22 points.
In the season-opener for both teams, Quinnipiac improved to 1-0 for the fifth time in the last eight years. The Bobcats await the winner of 2013 national runner-up Louisville and Loyola Chicago; and will travel to the winner's site for a Monday night clash.
A hot start from the hosting Bobcats paved a comfortable path for the remainder of the game. Quinnipiac jumped out to a 17-7 lead behind 14 points from Martin, who finished 7-of-7 from the field by night's end. The Bobcats concluded the half on a 29-16 run and took a 23-point lead into the locker room at halftime. They connected on nearly 54 percent of their shots and forced 12 Aggie turnovers to feed the surge.
North Carolina A&T fared better in the second half, but Quinnipiac was too tough on both ends of the floor – disallowing the comeback. In the end, 18 Aggie turnovers coupled with 13 Bobcat three-pointers was the difference in the outcome. Quinnipiac was 13-of-26 from long range, which featured 10 in the opening stanza.
Martin was the offensive catalyst on the evening, recording 16 of her 22 points in the first half. Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) also finished in double-figures with 10 points and three rebounds, while Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) and freshman Morgan Manz (Southbury, Conn.) added nine apiece. Ellen Cannon (West Chester, Pa.) added six points on two threes and six others chipped in with points to wrap up the scoring summary.
In addition to Manz's six points, Adily Martucci (Waterford, Conn.) picked up her first career points in a Bobcat uniform. She knocked down a three-point field goal in the second half and added a steal in her first game. Jaci Oskam (Glenmont, N.Y.) also saw her first action for Quinnipiac.
The Aggies were led by Tracy King and Adriana Nazario, who finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively. NC A&T heads to the consolation bracket for its next game.
