MERIDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team took a break from their summer session and spent the morning of Friday, June 14th with elementary students from local schools around the area.
Five members of the team – Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark), Adily Martucci (Waterford, Conn.), Maria Napolitano (Cincinnati, Ohio), Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and Katie Carroll (Westlake, Ohio) – made a short trip into Meriden to interact with kindergarteners, first, second and third graders in the community at Roger Sherman Elementary School and John Barry Elementary School.
The student-athletes were asked to motivate the children for this year's 'Governor Summer Reading Challenge.' Each summer the students are required to complete reading assignments in preparation for the next academic school year. The Bobcats went from classroom to classroom and encouraged them to read over the summer – offering incentives for each book they complete. The elementary school students are asked to keep a running log and to track of each book they read. Next year, the women's basketball program will reward the youngsters for each book completed with tickets and various prizes.
"I think sometimes we take the little things for granted," said McQuain, who is entering her final season of competition. "Being able to do something as simple as this to put a smile on kids' faces can make all the difference in their world. We look forward to coming back next fall and hope that they can come see us play next season."
The 2013-14 season is fast approaching and the Bobcats are anxious for their season-opener. The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team will be one of 16 teams in the 2013 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) this year. Quinnipiac will host North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the invitation-only tournament on Friday, November 8, 2013. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
