HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 14 games on Monday afternoon, as the Bobcats defeated Robert Morris, 60-46, before 1,024 people at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improved 22-2 overall and 13-0 in the Northeast Conference, and tied Marist for the sixth longest active win-streak in the NCAA Division I.
Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) continued her torrid stretch of basketball with another tremendous offensive performance. McQuain reached double-figures for the fourth straight game, compiling 21 points and seven rebounds in the triumph. Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) finished with 12 points, all coming in the second half, adding six rebounds and two assists to her stat line. Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) had eight points and six assists, while Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) dished out a game-high seven assists and four points.
Quinnipiac stifled RMU's offense early on and held the visiting Colonials to just one field goal through the first nine minutes of play. The Bobcats went up by as many as 11 points in the first half, but only connected on 31.3 percent of their field goal attempts – allowing RMU to hang around. Led by eight points and four rebounds from McQuain, Quinnipiac carried a mere five point lead, 25-20, into the lock room at halftime.
Nevertheless, Jasmine Martin and the Bobcats came to life immediately after the break, as the home team boasted a 13-2 run within the first three minutes of play. Martin collected seven points during that span, a stretch that would later balloon into a 48-29 Bobcat lead with 12 minutes remaining. Quinnipiac sustained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game and walked away with its 13th win at home this year.
Despite some struggles on the offensive end, Quinnipiac's defense was too much for Robert Morris to handle. The Bobcats forced 19 Colonial turnovers and held them to just 33.9 percent shooting. Quinnipiac controlled a 19-0 edge in points off turnovers, only committing six turnovers of their own on the afternoon. Abshire, Barron and Lisa Lebak (Robbinsville, N.J.) bumped QU's assist-to-turnover ratio with 15 assists compared to no turnovers.
Robert Morris was led by Artemis Spanou, who finished with 15 points and 19 rebounds. She picked up her 20th consecutive double-double and 22nd of the season.
With the season sweep, the Bobcats improved to 16-10 all-time against Robert Morris and are now 4-2 in the last six meetings.
The NEC contest with the Colonials was the first of four games through a seven day stretch. Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Monmouth University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
