HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team was ranked 12th in the most recent College Insider Mid-Major Poll, announced on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 by coaches on the committee. The Bobcats, 19-2 overall and 10-0 in the NEC, are off to their best start in program history.
On Saturday, Quinnipiac improved to 9-0 in NEC conference play after defeating Wagner College, 74-56, at the Spiro Sports Center in Staten Island, N.Y. Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 16 points and Quinnipiac converted 19 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points helping the team to the victory. Barron collected her 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting which included four field goals from downtown. Ellen Cannon (Westchester, Pa.) also nabbed double-digits with 10 points and three rebounds, while Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) added nine points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Quinnipiac once again turned defense into offense, forcing 23 turnovers – resulting in 24 points on the other end. The Bobcats dominated the glass, 46-33, holding the Seahawks to just four second chance points on five offensive rebounds. Quinnipiac also dished out 23 assists, a season-best in conference play, with a team-best coming from Gillian Abshire (Washington D.C.).
On Monday, Quinnipiac completed a successful road weekend with a 78-55 victory over Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. Sophomore point guard, Gillian Abshire marked a career high of 17 points to go along with four assists in the triumph. Joining Abshire in double-figures, Martin finished with 16 points and power forward McQuain collected her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She also added four assists four steals in the victory. Ostergaard poured in 11 points, seven coming in the first half, while junior Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in the triumph. The last time Quinnipiac featured five players in double figures was against St. John's on Dec. 22, 2012.
The College Insider Mid-Major poll featured Delaware in the top slot, taking 28 first place votes. Green Bay claimed second, the Bulldogs of Gonzaga garnered third, while Princeton and Toledo rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford ranked no. 25, who defeated the Bobcats on Dec. 16th, and James Madison (Honorable Mention), who the Bobcats defeated in their season-opener.
Up next, the Bobcats meet the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon for the second time this season. Tip-off is at 12 p.m. at the Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, Conn.
