EMMITSBURG, Md. –Sophomore Gillian Abshire (Washington D.C.) led the Bobcats with a career-high 17 points and four assists as they defeated Mount St. Mary's, 78-55, at the Knott Arena. Five players reached double figures in the win helping Quinnipiac improve to 19-2 overall and 10-0 in NEC competition - prolonging the program's best start in history.
Along with Abshire, sophomore Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) finished with 16 points and junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) collected her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She also added four assists four steals in the triumph. Sophomore Nikoline Ostergaard (Vedbaek, Denmark) poured in 11 points, seven coming in the first half, while Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in the triumph. The last time Quinnipiac featured five players in double figures was against St. John's on Dec. 22, 2012.
Shooting woes plagued the Bobcats in the first stanza as the team connected on just 33 percent of their shot attempts. Fortunately, Ostergaard came through for Quinnipiac with seven points and four rebounds in the first half. With 17:16 left in the opening frame, Martin drained a three to put the Bobcats up by five. Mount St. Mary's battled back to erase the deficit and take a lead of its own, but the Bobcats regained their composure as the halftime whistle neared. They closed the half on a 16-7 run, taking a 27-21 lead into the locker room at the break.
As the second half got underway, Quinnipiac moved the margin into double figures with a quick 6-0 run, as McQuain, Barron and Warner each scored during the stretch. The Bobcats sustained its double-digit lead through much of the second half – and then put the game out of reach with a final surge. Quinnipiac closed out the last four minutes of play on a 15-5 run, sealing the victory by knocking down free-throws in the waning seconds. McQuain was tremendous with 12 of her 14 points coming in the second half of action. Abshire turned the ball over just one time and went 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Quinnipiac's defense was relentless all game, forcing 24 Mount turnovers which resulted in 26 points on the other end. The Bobcats also held the Mountaineers to 34 percent from the floor and gathered a 38-22 edge in the paint. Quinnipac went 24-28 from the chalk for an 85.7 percent clip.
Leading Mount St. Mary's in scoring was senior forward Tara Lonergan who garnered 10 points and five rebounds. Lonergan went 5-6 from the floor. Junior guard Sydney Henderson also collected 10 points and six rebounds and two assists.
Quinnipiac leads the all-time record between the two programs 18-7 overall, with the Bobcats going 5-0 in the last five meetings.
Up next, the Bobcats meet the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon for the second time this season. Tip-off is at 12 p.m. at the Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, Conn.
