Women’s Basketball Ranked 12th in College Insider Mid-Major Poll

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team jumped up three spots and was recently ranked 12th in the latest College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 by coaches on the committee. This marks the highest ranking in Quinnipiac history since the Bobcats became eligible for the poll back in 1998 when they joined NCAA Division I.

Most recently, the Bobcats improved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in conference competition with two NEC wins this past weekend. Off and running to their best start since the 2007-08 campaign, Quinnipiac defeated Sacred Heart and Bryant in this past weekend's competition.

On Saturday afternoon against Sacred Heart, the Bobcats pulled away in the second half en route to a 74-45 triumph. Sophomore Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) finished with 21 points, going 9-of-16 from the floor, and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. McQuain was joined in double-figures by Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Felicia Barron(Springfield, Mass.) as the duo once again carried the Bobcats backcourt. Martin finished with 14 points and four rebounds, while Barron added 13 points and snatched two steals. Camryn Warner (Keene, N.H.) earned her first start of the campaign and garnered a season-high nine points to go along with four rebounds. Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) had seven points and game-high six assists.

On Monday night against the Bulldogs, Quinnipiac added another win with a 73-52 victory.  Barron carried the Bobcats with 19 points and four rebounds while McQuain turned in her second straight double-double performance with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Four different Quinnipiac players finished in double figures, led by Barron's 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.  Martin had 10 points in the second half to finish with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists in the outing.  Abshire compiled a career high of 10 assists while also adding eight points and three steals. Sophomore Nikoline Ostergaard (Vaebak, Denmark) recorded 10 points and five rebounds against the Bulldogs.

The top five spots in the College Insider Mid-Major poll contained the same teams with Delaware taking seven first place votes and the No. 1 slot. The Bulldogs of Gonzaga claimed second, Toledo garnered third, while Chattanooga and Green Bay rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 22), who defeated the Bobcats on Dec. 16th, and James Madison (Honorable Mention), who the Bobcats beat in their season-opener.

The Bobcats travel to Pennsylvania this weekend as they will take on the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Charles L. Sewall Center in Moon Township, Pa.  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.  The Colonials are currently 3-11 overall and 2-1 in NEC action.
