NCAA Division I College Insider Mid-Major Poll
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team was recently ranked 18th in the latest College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by coaches on the committee. Quinnipiac wrapped up their 2012 schedule this past weekend at the FIU Sun and Fun Classic and improved to 9-2 through non-conference competition – their best start since the 2007-08 campaign.
The top five spots in the College Insider Mid-Major poll remained pretty much the same team with the Bulldogs of Gonzaga taking 29 first place votes and the No. 1 slot. Chattanooga claimed second, Delaware garnered third, while Green Bay and Toledo rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 9), who defeated the Bobcats on Dec. 16th, and James Madison (No. 21), who the Bobcats beat in their season-opener. Northeastern also received votes in the poll.
Over the weekend, the Bobcats took part in the Fun & Sun Classic in Miami, Fla. and went 1-1 in two games. In a first round loss to ACC foe Georgia Tech, Quinnipiac featured three players in double-figures led by junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) who finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals. McQuain battled underneath in a strong showing and finished with 17 points going 7-of-11 from the floor. Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) added 15 points, all coming in the second half, while Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) added 10 points and four steals.
In the consolation game, the Bobcats faced the Northeastern Huskies where Quinnipiac dominated with hot shooting from behind the arc. The Bobcats defeated the Huskies 83-72 for their ninth win of the season. Sophomore Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) picked up her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team. Barron once again led the team in scoring with 18 and snatched three steals in the triumph. Martin also chimed in with 15 points for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats will return to the hardwood as they enter Northeast Conference play against LIU Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan 5th (12 p.m.), St. Francis Brooklyn on Jan. 7th (7:00 p.m.) and the Pioneers of Sacred Heart on Jan. 12th (12 p.m.) - with all the action at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
