HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team was ranked 18th in the latest College Insider Top-25 Mid-Major Poll, announced on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. With their win last weekend, the Bobcats improved to 7-0 for the first time in program history since moving to the NCAA's top division. It also marks their best start since the 1985-86 campaign.
Quinnipiac, currently ranked No. 53 in the nation, remain in an elite group of 10 other teams who are still undefeated thus far. Most recently, head coach Tricia Fabbri collected career win No. 250 in a 61-49 Bobcats' victory over Holy Cross this past weekend. Fabbri improved 250-240 in her time at Quinnipiac, which now includes a 16-2 record in non-conference games since last season.
It wasn't the prettiest game of the season, but QU escaped with a comfortable victory at the TD Bank Sports Center on Saturday. Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) led the Bobcats offensively with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals. Fresh off a 21-point performance in the Brown Bear Classic Championship game, sophomore Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) recorded double-digits for the fourth time in her last five games with 12 points. She went 4-of-8 from behind the arc and grabbed three rebounds in the win. Joining Martin with a hot hand from long range was fellow classmate Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.), who nabbed 11 points which included three, three-point field goals in 25 minutes of action.
Junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) and sophomore Gillian Abshire (Washington, D.C.) also played well for the Bobcats. McQuain scored seven points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Abshire finished with seven points and a game-high five assists. For the game, Holy Cross captured the edge in rebounding, 52-40, and points in the paint, 30-22. However, Quinnipiac's 27 points due to the long-range shot proved to be the difference. Holy Cross finished 3-of-13 from behind the arc.
The top five spots in the College Insider Mid-Major poll remained the same with the Bulldogs of Gonzaga taking 28 first place votes and the No. 1 slot. Green Bay received two first place votes and garnered second, while Middle Tennessee, Delaware and Chattanooga rounded out the top five. Other noteworthy teams include Hartford (No. 13), who the Bobcats will take on this weekend, James Madison (No. 19), who the Bobcats beat in their season-opener, and Sacred Heart (No. 24), a fellow member of the Northeast Conference.
