Fabbri, Barron And McQuain Earn College Sports Madness NEC Preseason Laurels
Hamden, Conn. –Senior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass) and women's basketball head coach Tricia Fabbri were selected the College Sports Madness NEC Preseason Player of the Year and Coach of the Year to begin the 2012-13 season, announced by the association on Thursday, October 18, 2012. Barron was also selected to the All-Conference Preseason First team alongside junior forward Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.).
Fabbri enters her 18th season on the Bobcats' sideline with 243 career victories marking her the schools winningest coach. In 2011-12, Fabbri guided the Bobcats to one of their most accomplished seasons in Quinnipiac history, adding to an impressive resume at the helm of the women's basketball program.
This past season, Fabbri and the Bobcats completed a tremendous campaign while leading Quinnipiac to their third 20-plus win season, their 12th consecutive Northeast Conference Tournament appearance and their second Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Fabbri ranks second all-time in career NEC regular-season wins (157) and overall NEC wins (164), after adding significantly to the totals last year.
Barron, a 5-7 guard, returns to the Bobcats for her final year of eligibility after a breakout year last season. Barron averaged 16.5 points, 4.2 steals, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 2011-12 and earned her first career NEC accolade. Furthermore, her 133 steals was a nation-best, while her 16.5 points had her ranked fifth in the Northeast conference. Barron's season was highlighted by a record-breaking performance against Bryant (12/3), where she surpassed the NEC and QU marks for most steals (12) in a game.
McQuain nearly averaged a double-double last season, bringing in 10.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game. McQuain made her mark in the NEC, ranking third in double-doubles (11) and fourth in rebounding; a season highlighted by a 20-point, seven-rebound outburst against Monmouth in the NEC semifinals.
