Hamden, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's basketball head coach Tricia Fabbri has named three captains for the upcoming 2012-13 season. Senior Shelby Sferra (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) and sophomores Gillian "Boo" Abshire (Washington DC) and Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) will lead the Bobcats as they look to clinch their 13th consecutive appearance in the Northeast Conference Tournament.
"As we head in to what promises to be a great year, the players and coaches have selected three young ladies in Shelby, Boo and Jasmine who we believe can help lead our team to unprecedented successes," said women's basketball head coach Tricia Fabbri. "Shelby, a senior, knows what we expect out of our student athletes and is a great choice to lead our team. The fact that both Boo and Jasmine are only sophomores speaks to their maturity and respect that the team has for them."
Sferra, a two-time captain for the Bobcats, appeared in 13 games for Quinnipiac last season. She averaged 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game, highlighted a season-high of eight points against Bryant (1/12). In the 2010-11 season, Sferra appeared in 24 games which included five starts for Quinnipiac. She recorded career-bests in points (54), rebounds (50) and assists (9), while shooting .357 percent from the floor.
Abshire started in all 32 games last season for the Bobcats. She averaged 2.7 points, 3.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game in her inaugural campaign. She led the team in assists (101) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3), ranking 10th overall and fourth, respectively, in the NEC. She scored a career-high seven points twice last season against Bryant on 12/03 and then again during the WNIT Tournament game against Temple. The sophomore ranked fourth on the team with 31 steals for the 2011-12 season.
Martin appeared in 31 games en route to an NEC All-Rookie team selection in 2011-12. The 5-8 guard ranked second in team scoring, averaging 11.2 points per game, good enough for second among freshman in the NEC. Martin set a career-high of 22 points against conference foe Robert Morris, a feat that earned her NEC Rookie of the Week honors. Martin also crushed the boards, hauling in 104 rebounds which ranked her fourth on the team at the end of the season.
