The Quinnipiac women's basketball team's last day in Florence marked the midway point of their trip abroad. The team spent the Italian Assumption Holiday visiting many of the city's treasures, also adding a sightseeing tour of the city of Pisa and the famous Leaning Tower. The Bobcats explored the town visiting the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, or Florence Cathedral and the fourth largest church in Europe which is lavishly decorated in red, white, and green marble. Making their way around the church, the Bobcats came upon the Accademia Gallery which is home to Michaelangleo's most famous masterpiece, the sculpture of David. The team was able to learn, from a local tour guide, the artistry and techniques of the carvings and silhouettes during the time period.
After the day's tour, the Bobcats were given the opportunity to go shopping along the city streets for some fine Italian leather, cashmere scarves, and other souvenirs to remember their trip in Florence. After boarding their tour bus to set out for Pisa, the Bobcats were able to rest and take some time out to relax after a long morning of sightseeing and shopping.
In Pisa, the team marveled at the architecture and fasciae that the tall leaning tower featured. Like many tourists, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to photograph themselves either holding up or pushing down the Pisa Tower while walking the grounds. The Bobcats were even lucky enough to have the chance to climb the 300 steps to the top of the Tower and feel the effects of how much the
tower bent. As the team climbed, each player felt exactly where they were in the structure. It also allowed for a great view of the surrounding area. Atop the structure, the team was able to have 360 degree views and see the mountains and Pisa Soccer Stadium, as well as posing for photographs.
Next up for the Bobcats, the team will travel to their third stop of their 10-day tour when they visit the sinking city of Venice, featuring the Tronchetto Marina, Piazza San Marco Square, while also taking a gondola ride through the ancient city.
