LORETTO, Pa. – Junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) registered a game-high 24 points to lead the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team to a Northeast Conference win against Saint Francis (Pa.), 85-73, on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena in the Maurice Stokes Athletics Center. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Red Flash drop to 6-10, 3-2 in the conference.
The Bobcats' 85-point victory stands as the highest point total this season. In addition, the team outshot the Red Flash from the floor (60.8-to-42.6) with a season-high 60.8 shooting percentage (31-for-51). Quinnipiac also outshot Saint Francis (Pa.) from three-point range (71.4-to-44.4). The Bobcats' 71.4 shooting percentage (10-for-17) was led by Barron's 6-for-7 shooting from behind the arc.
Barron led the Bobcats as she went 8-for-11 on the afternoon. Senior Kari Goodchild (Van Horne, Iowa) matched a season-high 16 points, while freshman Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, N.J.) compiled 12 points and six boards. Sophomore Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.
Hot shooting propelled the Bobcats to a double-digit halftime advantage, led by 13 points from Barron. With the score knotted at 15 apiece, QU caught fire around the midway point and closed out the stanza with a 23-12 run. The Bobcats connected on 55 percent of their field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from downtown; en route to a 38-27 lead at the break.
The high shooting percentage was due in large part to creating easy baskets underneath. The Bobcats controlled a 20-8 edge in points in the paint and turned five Red Flash turnovers into eight points on the other end.
Similar to the first half, QU's potent attack aided the visitors in the second frame. The Bobcats opened their largest lead of the game, 21 points, just five minutes into the half. Saint Francis (Pa.) chipped away at its deficit, but never climbed to within seven points of QU. The Bobcats pulled away in the waning minutes and held on for their sixth win in their last eight tries.
Rhonda Watts led Saint Francis (Pa.) with a team-high 17 points. The Red Flash return to action when they host NEC foe Sacred Heart on Monday, Jan. 16.
The Bobcats will take on Robert Morris in a conference match-up on Monday night in Moon Township, Pa. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
