HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac women’s basketball team was named Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, while freshman Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) received her second Rookie of the Week accolade, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Barron receives her first NEC weekly award of the 2011-12 season after leading the Bobcats to back-to-back conference wins on the road at Saint Francis (Pa.), 85-73, and Robert Morris, 82-74. The 5-7 guard was the team’s leading scorer in both outings, averaging 25.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Barron shot well 56 percent (14-for-25) from the floor, while converting 9-of-16 (.867) of her three-point field goal attempts. She also went 13-for-15 from the free-throw line, for an 86.7 shooting percentage. Barron finished 9-of-11 free-throws in Quinnipiac’s victory at Robert Morris. After scoring 24 points at Saint Francis (Pa.), Barron registered a career-high 26 points against RMU. The Springfield, Mass. native continues to lead the nation with 4.9 steals per contest.
Martin picks up the second NEC weekly praise of her rookie campaign after compiling 31 points across 34 minutes in the Bobcats’ last two outings. The 5-8 guard led all league freshmen with an average of 15.5 points per game, while shooting 55 percent as she went 11-for-20 from the floor. Martin recorded six rebounds and a career-high 22 points as she connected on 8-of-13 field goals rebounds at Robert Morris. Martin proved to be an integral asset off the bench as she shot 50 percent (4-for-8) from beyond the arc.
Fairleigh Dickinson’s Mariyah Laury also garnered Co-Player of the Week honors after guiding the Knights to two league victories last week.
The Bobcats return to action when they travel to play Bryant in a conference showdown on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at Chase Athletic Center in Smithfield, R.I.
