Felicia Barron And Jasmine Martin Receive Post-Season NEC Honors
HAMDEN, Conn. – Two members of the Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team garnered All-Northeast Conference awards, as announced by the league office via Twitter on Wednesday, Feb. 29. Junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) was named Defensive Player of the Year and chosen All-NEC first team, while freshman Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) was selected to the All-NEC rookie team.
Barron receives her first post-season conference accolades after a tremendous season with the Bobcats. The 5-7 guard was named NEC Player of the Week three times during the year after leading the team with 17.1 points per game to compile 496 points in the regular season. Barron is currently 11 points away from reaching the 1,000-point mark in her career.
In addition, Barron has continued to lead the NCAA in steals per game (4.45) throughout 2011-12. Her 12-steal performance broke a NEC single-game record and ranked at the top of the country for individual highs. She also set a new Quinnipiac Division-I single-season record after collecting a total of 129 steals as a red-shirt junior. Barron started in all 29 contests and averaged a team-best 28.3 minutes per outing.
Martin, a 5-8 guard, joins the All-Rookie squad after finishing the regular season as the Bobcats’ second leading scorer with 10.9 points per contest and 316 points on the year. Martin made 29 appearances in her freshman campaign and averaged 20.1 minutes per game, while pulling down an average of 3.4 rebounds.
The two-time NEC Rookie of the Week honoree maintained a 37.4 field-goal percentage from the floor, while shooting 32.7 percent from beyond the arc this season. Martin’s individual performances were highlighted as she registered a career-best 22 points against league foe Robert Morris in late January. She also hit a game-winning buzzer beater to lift Quinnipiac over Big Ten opponent Minnesota, 66-64, at the Saint Mary’s Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Bobcats return to action as they compete in their 12th consecutive NEC Tournament this weekend. Second-seeded Quinnipiac will host No. 7 Mount St. Mary’s in the NEC Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
