HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Jasmine Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) of the Quinnipiac women’s basketball team was named Choice Hotel/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday, Nov. 28. The weekly accolade is Martin’s first collegiate honor and the Bobcats’ first of the 2011-12 season.
Martin receives the NEC award after helping Quinnipiac win back-to-back games to capture the 2011 Saint Mary’s Concord Hilton Thanksgiving Classic. The 5-8 rookie tallied 13 points in each of the Bobcats non-conference victories at the Thanksgiving Tournament, while also collecting six rebounds across 39 minutes.
Martin provided a spark off the bench the final minutes against Big Ten opponent Minnesota and West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary’s. In the first round of tournament play, Martin scored the game-winning basket in the final seconds to send Quinnipiac past the Minnesota Gophers, 64-62. In addition, the Sicklerville, N.J. native turned in an assist to set up teammate Felicia Barron’s (Springfield, Mass.) three-pointer that gave the Bobcats a 66-62 lead over Saint Mary’s with less than two minutes left to play. Quinnipiac would go on to defeat Saint Mary’s, 69-67, for the tournament title. Additionally, Martin shot 100 percent from the free-throw line, scoring 7-of-7 baskets from the line.
Martin currently ranks third on the team in points (64) and points per game (12.8). She also leads the team with a 78.9 free-throw percentage, while averaging 2.6 rebounds per contest.
The Bobcats return to action when they host Massachusetts on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
