Women's Basketball Falls To Monmouth, 55-36, In NEC Quarterfinals
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The seventh-seeded Quinnipiac University
women's basketball team lost, 55-36, to No. 2 Monmouth University
in a Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match-up on
Saturday, March 5. With the loss, the Bobcats end the 2010-11
season with a 14-16 overall record and an 11-7 mark in conference
Quinnipiac was led by senior Lailah
Pratt (Palmyra, N.J.) and freshman Brittany
McQuain (Independence, Mo.), who each scored eight points and
each pulled down seven boards. The Hawks' Abby Martin led the game
with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams posted field-goal percentages of less than 30 percent in
a low-scoring first half. The score was tied, 4-4, six minutes into
play. After Monmouth's Alysha Womack hit a free throw to create a
one-point point lead, 5-4, Pratt pulled down an offensive rebound
and scored two points for Quinnipiac to take the lead, 6-5, with 11
minutes on the clock.
The first three-pointer of the game was scored by the Hawks' Gabby
Singer, which put Monmouth in front, 11-10, with 6:30 remaining in
the half. Both teams continued to battle down the stretch, yet the
Hawks were able to hold a 20-18 advantage at the break, after
Singer drained a three-pointer with only seconds on the clock.
The Bobcats went 2-2 from the line, while the Hawks scored 6-of-14
from the charity stripe in the first half.
Monmouth's Martin scored six straight points early in the second
half, putting the Hawks ahead by eight, 26-18, at the 14-minute
mark. Monmouth continued to keep control of the ball and the lead
as Womack and Martin pushed the run to 10-0.
Barron (Springfield, Mass.) ended the Hawks' 10-point run with
two points to narrow the gap to 30-20. Alexis Canady added two
points to Monmouth's 10-point lead before the Bobcats scored five
straight points, capped at the 11:32 mark by Kari
Goodchild's (Van Horne, Iowa) three-pointer to close to within
seven points, 32-25.
The Hawks responded with an 11-0 run, led by Martin, who scored six
points. Canady also canned a three-point shot, increasing
Monmouth's lead to 43-27. Pratt made two free-throws for the
Bobcats before the Hawks went on a 10-0 run. The score read 53-29
with just under five minutes remaining.
Quinnipiac senior Alyssa Jann (Westford, Mass.) nailed the Bobcats'
last three points of the game from long range, before Rooney made
two from the charity stripe with just less than two minutes
remaining in the game. With the victory, the Hawks advance to the
NEC Semifinals on Tuesday, March 8, and will play host to the
winner of this afternoon's quarterfinal match-up between No. 4
Robert Morris and fifth-seeded Long Island.
