Women's Basketball Falls At Long Island, 70-58
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Freshman Brittany
McQuain (Independence, Mo.) recorded her third career
double-double, posting 14 points and 10 rebounds, but the
Quinnipiac University women's basketball team lost at Long Island,
70-58, in a Northeast Conference match-up at the Wellness Center on
Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 10-12 and
7-4 in conference play, while the Blackbirds improve to 14-8 and
6-5 in the NEC.
McQuain led the Bobcats with a career-high 14 points, while senior
Courtney
Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points and junior
Kari
Goodchild (Van Horne, Iowa) pulled down a career and team-high
12 rebounds.
The Blackbirds' Ashley Palmer led all scorers with 24 points, while
Krystal Wells and Chelsi Johnson each posted double figures,
scoring 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Despite the loss, Quinnipiac outrebounded Long Island, 46-38. The
Bobcats scored 13 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.
Quinnipiac shot 40 percent from the floor (26-65), while LIU shot
42.2 percent from the field (27-64). Long Island led the game from
the free-throw line, outshooting Quinnipiac 13-4 from the charity
stripe.
Long Island took its biggest lead of the first half, three points,
only two minutes into play. Goodchild hit a three-pointer, to tie
the Blackbirds, 7-7, with 16:16 on the clock. Quinnipiac went on to
hold a four-point advantage, 13-9, for its biggest lead of the
half, with 15 minutes remaining. The first half saw five lead
changes and the score was tied six times. Ashley Palmer's jumper in
the paint with 24 seconds left, put the Blackbirds ahead by two
points, 26-24, at the break. McQuain scored eight of her 14 points
in the first half, while the Blackbirds' Palmer connected on
5-of-13 field goals and 1-of-2 free throws, compiling 11 points in
the half.
The Bobcats held a four-point advantage, 33-29, with 16 minutes
left to play in the game. The Blackbirds' responded with a Johnson
three-pointer and an additional two points by Palmer to take back
the lead and put Long Island on top for the remainder of the
game.
The Blackbirds extended their lead to as many as 14 points, 69-55,
down the stretch. Long Island added a She'tiarra point, while
Quinnipiac's Kaminski made a free throw and Brittany
Hill (Mechanicsville, Va.) scored a layup, in the last minute
of the game. Long Island would go on to win, 70-52.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it plays St. Francis (N.Y.) on
Monday, February 7 at 7 p.m. at the Peter Aquilone Court in
Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.
