NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Junior Courtney Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) recorded her team-high fourth double-double of the season as the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team defeated intra-state rival Central Connecticut State, 56-45 Thursday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium. The Bobcats' stifling defense limited the Blue Devils to a season-low 45 points, including 12 in the first half. The win improves Quinnipiac's record to 4-1 in Northeast Conference play and 9-7 overall. The loss drops the Blue Devils' record to 2-3 in league play and 5-10 overall.
"I can't say enough about our effort and how we came to play tonight," said Head Coach Tricia Fabbri. "What a great group of players to be around. We are a team in every sense of the word. This is a great team to be around and I could not be more proud of them."
Kaminski nearly had a double-double in the first half as she pulled down 10 boards and added eight points. Sophomore Jacinda Dunbar (Edison, N.J.) matched Kaminski at the break with the team-high eight points in the first half. Quinnipiac's defense, already ranked 16th in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, held the Blue Devils to just 10.7 percent (3-of-28) shooting in the first half. Central Connecticut did not reach double-digits until 1:17 remaining in the first as the Bobcats took a 27-12 lead into halftime. The 12 points allowed by Quinnipiac was the fewest points in a half since holding Robert Morris to 12 in the final half on Feb. 27, 2006.
The second half was a different story for the Blue Devils, scoring 33 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Quinnipiac's early turnovers in the final stanza allowed CCSU to get back in the game before putting them away late with key free-throws and defensive stops.
After scoring a then career-best nine points in the team's last game, junior Lailah Pratt (Palmyra, N.J.) scored 10 points against CCSU Thursday. The third-year Bobcat also added seven rebounds and two blocks before fouling out in the final minute.
Dunbar finished just two rebounds short of her fourth double-double of the season as she scored a team-high 12 points and had eight boards. Kaminski played just eight minutes in the final period and finished with 10 points and 11 boards in the game.
Alexandria Dowdy was the lone CCSU player to reach double figures in scoring in the game, finishing with 12. Justina Udenze tied Kaminski with 11 boards in the game, but fouled out midway through the second half and couldn't help her team complete a comeback down the stretch.
Quinnipiac held the Blue Devils to just 27.3 percent (15-55) in the game, while the Bobcats shot 39.3 percent (22-56). Continuing the trend of dominating the boards, Quinnipiac outrebounded CCSU, 44-38, in the win as well.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m., when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., to take on the Bulldogs of Bryant University at Chace Athletic Center.
