HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team received one vote in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division I Coaches Poll, released Dec. 9, 2008. The Bobcats are currently 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast Conference. This is the second time in program history that Quinnipiac has received a vote in the poll as the team was recognized Jan. 15, 2008.
Most recently, the Bobcats defeated Monmouth, 57-52, in their conference opener Saturday at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The win marked the fourth consecutive victory at home to open the season for Quinnipiac. Prior to defeating the Hawks, the Bobcats handed Hartford a 12-point loss, 73-61, on Dec. 3. Quinnipiac also defeated Delaware and Providence in the Bobcats' first two home games of the season.
Quinnipiac began the season with three consecutive road wins, including a win against tournament-host Vermont on Nov. 22 at the TD Banknorth Classic, 72-53. Erin Kerner (Erie, Pa.) leads the Bobcats this season with 16.6 points per game, fourth in the NEC. Brianna Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) leads the team with 20 steals this season and is fourth in the conference with 2.5 per game, while Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa) is shooting .432 (16-of-37) from three-point range, fifth in the NEC. Kathleen Neyens (Jaffrey, N.H.) had back-to-back double-doubles against Providence and Hartford, including setting career highs in points (18), rebounds (12) and assists (4).
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, December 13, when they travel to Staten Island, N.Y., to take on Wagner in Quinnipiac's first NEC road game of the season. The game is set for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
