PROVIDENCE, R.I. Erin Kerner's (Erie, Pa.) season-high 25 points led the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team to a 79-62 victory against Brown University Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Nineteen of Kerner's 25 points came in the second half. Senior co-captain Mandy Pennewell added 17 points and nine rebounds, including five offensive boards. The win improves the Bobcats to 2-0 this season, while Brown drops to 0-2.
Following a Kathleen Neyens' (Jaffrey, N.H.) three-pointer 36 seconds into the game, Brown went on a 7-0 run. Senior Brianna Rooney's (Guilford, Conn.) three-pointer with 15:47 remaining in the opening period brought the Bobcats back to within one, 7-6, after going nearly four minutes with a basket.
After Brown regained the lead, Kerner found Rooney alone on the left side for the open three-point field goal. Rooney's second three-pointer of the game gave the Bobcats an 18-17 lead with 9:34 left in the first half.
The Bobcats went into halftime with a four-point lead, 35-31. Pennewell led Quinnipiac with nine points at the intermission, while Rooney added eight. The Bobcats outrebounded the Bears, 24-20, in the first half, including 12 on the offensive glass.
Quinnipiac went on a 12-2 run to start the second half. Kerner began the half shooting 3-of-3 from the floor as the Bobcats led by as many as 14. Brown's Karly Grace brought the Bears back to within nine with a three-pointer from 25 feet out.
Kerner's play in the second half helped the Bobcats pull away from the Bears for the 17-point win. The senior co-captain shot 8-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final 20 minutes.
Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.), in just her second collegiate game, added eight points off the bench for the Bobcats. Neyens had a game-high four steals with three coming in the second half.
Rooney finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Brown's Grace and Christina Johnson led the Bears with 15 points each. All of Grace's 15 points came on the three-pointer as she went 5-of-13 from behind the arc.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Nov. 22 in Burlington, Vt., as they take on the University of Vermont in the TD Banknorth Classic. The Bobcats and Catamounts are scheduled for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
