Quinnipiac University Bobcats (1-0) at
Brown
University Bears (0-1)
Sunday, November 16, 2008 2 p.m.
Pizzitola Sports Center -
Providence, R.I.
Sunday's Game
Quinnipiac squares off with Brown for just the second time in program history. The two teams met last season at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in the Bobcats' season opener on Nov. 11. Quinnipiac defeated the Bears, 85-41, on the strength of Erin Kerner's (Erie, Pa.) 21 points. Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa.) added 20 of her own in the Bobcats' victory. Quinnipiac enters Sunday's game with Brown having won its first game of the season, 59-45, against Stony Brook Friday afternoon. The Bears lost their season opener, 62-39, to Providence on Friday night. Sunday's game marks the Bears' first home game of the season, while it is the second of four straight road games to open the year for the Bobcats.
Fresh
Start
Freshman Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) made an impact in her
first collegiate game. In just 15 minutes of play, Barron recorded
14 points and a game-high 7 steals. She had two separate
three-point plays in the early stages of the second half that
helped the Bobcats pull away from the Seawolves en route to the
their first win of the season. The seven steals are the second-most
in Quinnipiac Division I history, trailing Kerner's eight against
Central Connecticut on Feb. 1, 2006.
Hot
Hand
Kerner's 22 points against Stony Brook are her most in a
season-opening game during her four seasons with the Bobcats. Last
year, Kerner scored 21 points against Sunday's opponent, Brown, in
the 2007-08 opener.
Three-For-All
Last season, Kerner set a Quinnipiac program record with 63
three-point field goals. Against Stony Brook, Kerner hit 3-of-4
from behind the arc to begin the season. She finished the game
9-of-16 from the floor.
Team
Boards
Three Bobcats finished with a share of the team lead in rebounds
Friday afternoon. Senior Brianna Rooney (Guildford, Conn.), junior
Krystal Lazos (Medford, Conn.) and freshman Jacki Mann (Rutherford,
N.J.) each pulled down six boards. In her first collegiate game,
Mann grabbed four of her six rebounds on the offensive glass.
Rooney had a team-high five offensive boards.
Spread the
Wealth
Quinnipiac received a strong performance from its bench. The Bobcats' reserves outscored
Stony Brook's, 22-15. Barron's 14 points led the way for the
Bobcats coming off the bench. Of the 10 Quinnipiac players who saw
action in the game, nine scored.
Trending
Up
The Bobcats led the Seawolves, 23-22, at halftime. Last season, the
Bobcats posted a 19-2 record when leading at the half. Quinnipiac
outscored Stony Brook, 36-23, in the second half for the 14-point
win. The win was also the Bobcats' third consecutive victory to
open a season.
