The Quinnipiac University softball team dropped both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader to Iona, 9-3 and 13-3, at the QU Softball Field in Hamden, Conn. With the losses, Quinnipiac falls to 8-27 overall and 4-8 in the MAAC.
For the Bobcats, Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.), Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pa.) and Dani Edmands (Northborough, Mass.) all had two hits in the doubleheader, with Robey going 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Sophomore Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Mass.) connected for her first career home run.
On the mound, Robey took the loss in the first game after giving up five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 before giving way to Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.). Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, R.I.) took the loss in Game 2 after giving up six runs - four earned - on seven hits before exiting the game in the fourth. Alfiere once again entered the game in relief, and was tagged for seven runs over two innings.
In the first game, Iona took an early lead, which it would not relinquish, when it plated three runs in its first at-bats. Katie Jansson drove in two runs with a double, before scoring on a single by Sarah Schutz to give the Gaels an early lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a single before Johnson connected on the first pitch she saw of her at-bat and blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall to pull the Bobcats within a run, 3-2.
Robey settled in and cruised through the next three innings, before Iona struck for three runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. Eileen McCann drove in two in the fifth, before Allison Hand blasted a two-run homer in the sixth.
In the second game, Lindsley was tabbed for an unearned run in the second off a fielding error as Iona jumped out to a 1-0 lead. In the third, McCann drove in Kelsey Long with a triple before scoring on a single by Kristen Turner. Schultz then doubled home Turner to give Iona a 4-0 lead. Hand delivered a two-run double in the fourth to increase the Gaels lead to 6-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, Quinnipiac pushed three runs across to cut Iona's lead in half, 6-3. Paolucci walked with one out, before Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Conn.), who moved to second on a single by Robey. Edmands then doubled to right center to score Vitale before Molly Jarrett (Northport, N.Y.) singled up the middle to drive two more runs in.
It was all the offense that the Bobcats could muster for the day while Iona exploded for seven runs in the sixth to force the mercy rule.
Quinnipiac returns to action Wednesday, Apr. 16 when it hosts Stony Brook for a non-conference doubleheader at the QU Softball Field at 2:30 p.m.
