HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac softball team is slated for 59 games in the 2013 regular season schedule. The spring slate includes a showcase showdown against South Florida who advanced to the 2012 NCAA Women's College World Series as well as Harvard and the Northeast Conference's LIU Brooklyn who both advanced to the 2012 NCAA Softball Tournament Regional round.
The Bobcats will play a host of opponents including four from the America East conference, three each from the BIG EAST, Atlantic 10 and Ivy League, two from the Southern conference, Horizon League, Mid-American Conference (MAC) and Metro Atlantic (MAAC), and one each from the Colonial, Conference USA, Pacific Coast, Big South, and Patriot League. Among the 38 different opponents Quinnipiac will play, eight teams finished last season ranked in the NCAA Division I Top 100 Softball Rankings. The Bobcats will take part in three tournaments from February 16 through March 17 starting with the Lancer Leadoff Classic from Farmville, Va., then the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic Tournament, finally Quinnipiac plays 15 games as a participant in the USF Under Armour Series from Tampa, Fla. The Bobcats will play 16 home games compared to 17 on the road and 25 from neutral locations. The NEC slate will begin on March 23 as the Bobcats will play each conference foe (10 teams) twice with 10 home games compared to 10 on the road.
The 2013 season kicks off with a trip to Farmville, Va. for the Lancer Lead-Off Classic from Feb. 16-17. The Bobcats will play LaSalle as well as the host Longwood on Saturday Feb. 16 at 2:30 pm before playing a doubleheader on Sunday where they play LaSalle at 10:30 am and finish the tournament with another game against Longwood at 12:30 pm. The Longwood Lancers finished last season just outside the Top 100 at #109 in the NCAA Softball Rankings with a 29-26 record while LaSalle finished 2012 with a 9-40 record.
The following weekend from Feb. 22-24 Quinnipiac will take part in the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic Tournament from Greensboro, N.C. A matchup against Drexel kicks off the tournament for the Bobcats on Friday Feb. 22 at 10:00 am followed by a contest against the host UNC Greensboro at 3:00 pm later that day. Another matchup against Drexel at 10:00 am on Saturday follows and then the Bobcats will play Conference USA's Marshall, who finished last season 36-21 and ranked #55 in the nation, at 5:30 pm later that afternoon. The final game from the UNC Greensboro Tournament will be against the host Spartans on Sunday at 11:00 am.
The Bobcats will be busy in the month of March with 29 games in 31 days. March kicks off with a weekend in Tampa, Fla. competing in the USF Under Armour Series. Quinnipiac will first play the Horizon League's Loyola Chicago and Ill.-Chicago on Friday March 1 at 3:45 pm and 6:00 pm, respectively. Showdowns with Providence at 2:45 pm and Loyola Marymount at 5:00 pm follow on Saturday and finally the Bobcats will play Kent St. on Sunday at 9:00 am before flying home.
Quinnipiac plays its first home games of the season on Wednesday March 6 against Hartford with a doubleheader slated for 2:00 and 4:00 pm against the cross-town America East foe.
Later that week the Bobcats will fly back down to Fla. from Friday March 8 until Sunday March 17 in the USF Under Armour Series during Quinnipiac's spring break. The game action starts with a showdown against Boston University, who finished 2012 ranked #41 in the country with a record of 41-16, on Friday March 8 at 2:30 pm before playing Temple later that night at 4:45 pm. Saturday features just one game where the Bobcats play St. Joseph's at 9:30 am while a doubleheader will take up Sunday's action with games against Central Michigan at 9:00 am and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 11:00 am.
In the middle of the week the Bobcats will play three games outside of the USF Under Armour Series. Quinnipiac plays Maine from Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday March 12 at 2:30 pm before the big showdown of the 2013 nonconference slate. South Florida welcomes Quinnipiac on Tuesday at 5:00 pm as the Bobcats will look to take down the 2012 NCAA Women's College World Series finalist. The Bulls ran through regional play with an undefeated 3-0 record including an upset win over #5 ranked Florida. In the Super Regional round, South Florida took down Hofstra in three games to advance to the World Series where they lost to the eventual runner-up #4 Oklahoma. The final contest from the neutral location will be against another strong opponent in UT-Chattanooga who finished 39-16 and ranked #62 in the country on Wednesday at 12:00 pm.
The Bobcats will then play five more games from the USF Under Armour Series beginning with Maine and Radford on Friday. Radford is the fifth opponent Quinnipiac will play thus far that was ranked in the Top 100 to finish last season as the Highlanders went 34-21 and ranked #56. Colgate follows on Saturday at 11:00 am and the Under Armour Series wraps up with a pair of Ivy League opponents in Dartmouth on Saturday at 4:00 pm and finally Cornell on Sunday at 9:30 am.
Quinnipiac returns home where they will take on UConn from the BIG EAST on Wednesday March 20 at 1:00 pm and turn around to play Fairfield at 3:00 pm on Thursday also from Hamden.
NEC play begins on Saturday March 23 with a doubleheader at Robert Morris who finished with the best record in the conference last season at 35-22 and follow with a pair of games on Sunday March 24 against St. Francis (Pa.). A matchup against UConn on March 27 at 3:30 is sandwiched between another NEC weekend, this time at home for a doubleheader against Monmouth.
This month will be decisive for the Bobcats as it will feature 14 conference matchups as well as two games each against some of the strongest teams in the nation from last season in #87 Stony Brook (36-17 last season) and #95 Harvard (35-15, advanced to regional round of NCAA Softball Tournament where they went 2-2 in pool play).
April starts with a doubleheader at Stony Brook on Thursday April 4 before a big NEC weekend at home against LIU Brooklyn and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. LIU Brooklyn took down the Bobcats, 10-5, in the NEC Championship last season as the Bobcats look to exact a little revenge on the Blackbirds.
A non-conference game at Fairfield on Wednesday April 10 is scheduled for 3:30 pm before a pair of road conference doubleheaders against Wagner on Saturday and Sacred Heart on Sunday.
The Bobcats will play a pair of games at the Ivy League's Harvard on Thursday April 18 followed by a home doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday April 20.
The final NEC regular season weekend for Quinnipiac will start at Bryant for a doubleheader on April 27 and concludes at home against Central Conn. St. on Sunday April 28. Senior Day festivities will take part before the start of the first game against the Blue Devils around 12:40 pm on Sunday.
The Bobcats will cap the regular season at home with a pair of games against the Metro Atlantic's Manhattan on Saturday May 4 starting at 1:00 pm.
The 2013 Northeast Conference Tournament will take part from May 10-12 hosted by the team with the best record throughout conference play in the regular season.
