College Sports Madness All-NEC Preseason Selections

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior shortstop Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) was honored on Wednesday with a 2013 College Sports Madness All-NEC Preseason Second Team selection, as announced by the collegiate athletics website. The preseason honor is the first of Alba's career.

Alba earns the distinction coming off a breakout season in 2012 where the infielder earned a spot on the 2012 All-NEC Second Team for the second consecutive season. Alba shined both offensively and defensively from her shortstop position as she led the team and all NEC shortstops in defensive fielding percentage. Defense wasn't her only calling card as she carried the Bobcat's offense all season with the most doubles (15) among all NEC players. She also led the Bobcats in home runs (seven), runs batted in (32) and slugging percentage (.581). She also ranked second on the team in hits (52), runs scored (22), fewest strikeouts (12), batting average (.335), and on-base percentage (.366).

She was recently named Quinnipiac's Defensive Player of the Year at the team's annual banquet and recorded two hitting streaks of at least eight games last season. In the team's first eight games, Alba recorded at least one hit in each game as she tallied a .520 batting average (13-for-25) including six doubles, one triple and five RBIs in those eight games. Alba also put together an incredible stretch early in the year as she struck out just once in her first 60 at-bats (20 games).

Another one of Alba's most impressive spans of last season came through April 6 – 19 as the shortstop reeled of a 12 game hitting streak where she combined for a .350 batting average (14-for-40) with eight runs scored, four doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs. She also picked up her play when the team needed it most as she helped guide her team an NEC Semifinal win against Robert Morris going 2-for-6 with one run scored, one RBI and two stolen bases on May 11. Alba followed her Semifinal performance up with an impressive 1-for-3 afternoon against LIU Brooklyn in the NEC Championship with one double, three RBI and one stolen base.

The Bobcats open the 2013 season when they compete at the Lancer Leadoff Classic in Longwood, Virginia. Quinnipiac plays Longwood on Saturday Feb. 16 at 2:30 pm to kick off the start of the season.
