MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) allowed just one run over seven innings on Friday afternoon, as the #2 seeded Quinnipiac University softball team survived an elimination game against #3 Monmouth at Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pa. With the 3-1 victory, the Bobcats advance to face the top-seeded Colonials in another elimination game at 3:20 p.m.

Quinnipiac, now 31-17 overall, opened the scoring summary in the bottom of the first inning. Two Monmouth miscues in the field placed runners on second and third with one out, bringing Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) to the plate. Duffy manufactured the first run with an RBI groundout, pushing Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) across the dish for an early 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless top half of the second, the Bobcats generated the game's second run with a bit of small ball. Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, Calif.) reached base on a hit-by-pitch and then moved over to third base after a pair of sacrifice bunts. Heiberger, always alert on the base-path, capitalized on a wild pitch and scampered home from third for a 2-0 lead.

Neither team managed to score in the third inning, bringing Monmouth to the plate in the top of the fourth. The Hawks finally put some runners in scoring position, loading the bases with two outs in the inning. Chelsea Paprocki lined a single to left field to score the runner from third; however, Courtney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) threw out Kate Kuzma at home plate with a seed from left field to preserve the one-run advantage.

The Bobcats added two insurance runs in the sixth inning, but Schwartzburg only needed the two runs of support. The 2011 Pitcher of the Year recipient tossed a complete-game, allowed just one run on six hits and struck out three for her 19th win of the season.

Duffy led QU offensively with two RBI's on a three-hit afternoon, while Cabrera crossed the dish twice and tallied two hits.

Quinnipiac split the regular-season series with Robert Morris, dropping game one 1-0 before taking game two 3-1 at the QU Softball Field in Hamden, Conn.
