Softball Shuts Out Stony Brook, 4-0

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team won its sixth consecutive game as it earned a 4-0 shutout against America East opponent Stony Brook University on Tuesday afternoon at the QU Softball Field. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 29-15 on the year, while the Seawolves drop to 33-14-1 overall.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) earned her seventh victory of the season as she pitched a complete game against the Seawolves. Alfiere held Stony Brook to four hits as she walked two batters and fanned three. Stony Brook's Christine Lucido fell to 5-3 on the year as she allowed five hits, striking out five QU batters.

Four Bobcats each contributed one hit on the afternoon, including senior Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) who hit a three-RBI homerun against the Seawolves. Alfiere also earned one RBI in the outing.

After a scoreless first inning, Quinnipiac moved in front of Stony Brook, 4-0. Senior Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to the SBU shortstop. After Duffy moved to second base on a Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) sacrifice bunt, Alfiere laced a single to left center, driving in Duffy for the first run of the game. After Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) singled to third base, advancing Alfiere one base, Quinnipiac's catcher Heiberger launched a three-run homer to left center, her third homerun of the year.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Seawolves put themselves in scoring position as Alfiere loaded the bases. Stony Brook's Jess Combs stepped up to the plate and struck out looking with a full count, ending the inning with three runners left on base.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled.

The Bobcats return to action when they host their final games of the regular season against Northeast Conference opponent Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, May 5 at the QU Softball Field. The first contest of the two-game series is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Quinnipiac has also clinched a spot in the 2012 NEC Tournament which will take place on May 10-12 at top-seeded Robert Morris University.
