FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team fell, 5-2, in a non-conference match-up at Fairfield University on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 23-14 overall, while the Stags improve to 22-22 on the year.
The Bobcats' starting pitcher, senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) took her seventh loss of the season as she saw 2.2 innings from within the circle. Cabrera allowed four hits and three runs. QU senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also pitched 2.1 innings while sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) entered the game in the seventh inning, facing three batters. Fairfield's Rae Ball earned her 10th win as she pitched three innings of no-hit ball. Overall, the Bobcats were outhit by the Stags, 7-to-6.
Quinnipiac seized an early 1-0 lead with a run scored on three hits in the top of the first. With two outs and runners on first and second base, freshman Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) singled up the middle, bringing in junior Jacquie Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) from second.
The Bobcats kept the momentum and moved ahead of the Stags, 2-0, in the next inning. After Quinnipiac's first two batters each put up an out to begin the second inning, junior Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) reached first on a Fairfield error. Salgado advanced to second as Cabrera hit a single. After Ristow singled, Stags' catcher Lauren Liseth made an error, advancing all runners while allowing Salgado to score an unearned run on the play.
Fairfield responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning. After Cabrera let up a Kristen Filicia run and placed runners on second and third base, Schwartzburg entered the contest to relieve Cabrera. Alli Wigand then rifled a two-run single to right field, scoring Liseth and Sammy Ruffolo for the Stags' 3-2 advantage. Fairfield increased their lead, 5-2 when Liseth launched a two-run homer to right field in the fifth inning.
The Bobcats return to action when they host two Northeast Conference doubleheaders this weekend at the QU Softball Field in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac will first play top-ranked Robert Morris on Saturday, April 21 starting at 1 p.m., followed by Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, April 22 beginning at Noon.
