NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team split a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Central Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats earned a 3-2 win in game one, but fell, 4-2, in the second contest of the day. Quinnipiac becomes 18-11 overall and 6-4 in league action, while the Blue Devils now stand at 20-12 on the year and 2-4 in the NEC.

Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the Bobcats in the first outing as she pitched a complete game, scattering five hits and striking out seven batters. Schwartzburg improved to 11-3 on the year with the win. Central Connecticut State's Messina took the loss after allowing seven hits and an earned run.

After two scoreless innings, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead as junior Jacquie Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) singled to right field, driving in senior catcher Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) from third base. The Blue Devils responded with a pair of runs in the next inning to move in front of Quinnipiac, 2-1.

In the top of the fifth, Quinnipiac's Ristow hit another single when senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) crossed home plate on a CCSU error after advancing to third on Ristow's single. Junior Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) also scored on the play for the game-winning, unearned run.

In the next contest, Quinnipiac saw three Bobcats within the circle, including Cabrera, who dropped to 2-6 on the year as she allowed seven hits and four runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. Sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and Schwartzburg also pitched for QU. Messina improved to 14-6 with the CCSU victory.

Ristow launched her first home run of the 2012 season during the top of the first. The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 1-1.

Neither team would score in the next three innings until Central Connecticut widened the gap, 4-1, in the fifth inning as the Blue Devils hit back-to-back doubles, driving in two runs. McCoart then singled down the right-field line to bring in Springer for the 4-1 advantage.

The Bobcats attempted to narrow the deficit in the sixth inning when Cabrera tallied a run for QU as junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) hit a single to right field. However, Quinnipiac was unable to add to the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest, recording its second NEC split of the weekend.

Quinnipiac returns to action when it hosts the University of Connecticut on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m. at the QU Softball Field in Hamden, Conn.
