AMHERST, Mass. – The Quinnipiac University softball team dropped a non-conference game against the University of Massachusetts, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 13-9 on the year, while the Minutewomen improve to 14-10 overall.
Quinnipiac and Massachusetts saw tremendous efforts from within the circle, as both squads' pitchers combined for 26 strikeouts in the outing. Bobcats' senior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) matched her second-best strikeout performance of the season as she fanned 11 UMass batters, while allowing only four hits and an earned run across six innings. The Minutewomen's starting pitcher Sara Plourde pitched a no-hitter, striking out 15 members of the QU club.
The Bobcats posted a perfect showing defensively, while UMass had one error in the contest.
After two scoreless innings, UMass added the only run of the game in the bottom of the third. With two outs and Teea Rogers on first base, Quianna Diaz-Patterson doubled to left field, driving in Rogers for the 1-0 shutout.
QU's Schwartzburg drops to 8-3 in her senior campaign, while Plourde becomes 13-8 this season for the Minutewomen.
With a 2-2 mark in Northeast Conference play, Quinnipiac returns to action when it plays its 2012 home opener against league foe Sacred Heart on Sunday, April 1. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at Noon at the QU Softball Field in Hamden, Conn.
