SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated San Diego, 3-2, in a non-conference game at the USD Softball Complex on Wednesday night. QU was led by junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) who went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, including the game-winner. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 10-5 overall, while the Toreros drop to 11-11 on the year.
Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) improved her season record to 6-1 as she faced 27 San Diego batters. Schwartzburg allowed five hits and struck out two Toreros, while San Diego's Kaitlin Healy saw 6.1 innings, earning her second loss of the year. San Diego pitcher Jenny Lahitte also made an appearance against one QU batter.
San Diego recorded the game's first run in the bottom of the first when Diana Prelsnik scored from third base. Quinnipiac responded in the next inning to tie the game, 1-1. With two outs in the top of the second, Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) registered an unearned run when Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) reached first on a Toreros throwing error.
Alba led off the third inning with a double to left field. After senior Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) fouled out, Heiberger also doubled to left field, allowing Alba to cross home plate, giving QU a 2-1 advantage.
After two scoreless innings, the San Diego tied the game back up, 2-2. In the sixth, Lauren Tomey singled to left field, driving in Prelsnik from second base for the tying run. Quinnipiac wouldn't let up and took back its lead in the seventh as Duffy hit a double, driving in Alba from first for her second run of the night.
The Bobcats return to action when they compete at the San Diego Classic II on March 16-18. Quinnipiac kicks off tournament play against Cal. State Bakersfield on Friday, March 16 at 12 p.m. (EST).
