RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated the University of California Riverside, 3-2, in the final day of the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Sunday. With the non-conference win, the Bobcats improve to 9-4 on the year, while the Highlanders drop to 12-13 overall.
After falling to UC Riverside, 3-2, in yesterday's tournament match-up, the Bobcats came back for their second win at the UC Riverside tourney.
Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) improved to 5-1 on the year as she pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits against 32 batters faced. UC Riverside's Lwin took the loss. Together, the Bobcats contributed seven hits, led by senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) as she went 3-for-4 in the outing.
Sophomore Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) led off the top of the second with a homerun to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard, 1-0. With two outs on the inning, junior Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) doubled to center field. Freshman Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) then singled to left field and advanced to second, driving in Kesses for the Bobcats' 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Quinnipiac widened the gap, 3-0, as Paolucci flied out to left field, allowing Cabrera to cross home plate from third base. UC Riverside battled back and added a run in the fourth and fifth innings, narrowing its deficit to 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Highlanders had a chance to tie the game with Kayla White on first base. Schwartzburg kept the Bobcats in front as she struck out two UC Riverside batters. After Jessica Vasser walked, Schwartzburg collected her ninth strikeout against Alaina Thomas who struck out looking.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it takes on San Diego State on Tuesday, March 13 at 9 p.m. (EST).
