RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Quinnipiac University softball team split a pair of non-conference games in the second day of tournament action at the Amy S. Harrison Classic at UC Riverside on Saturday. The Bobcats shut out Saint Joseph's, 1-0, and lost to tournament host UC Riverside, 3-2. The Bobcats are now 8-4 on the year.

After falling to Loyola Marymount, 3-0, in the opening day of tourney play on Friday, the Bobcats came back with a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's in the first game of the day.

Quinnipiac was led by senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) from within the circle as she picked up her first win of the 2011-12 season. Cabrera pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out three batters on the afternoon. The Hawks' Ashway took the loss as three Bobcats combined for four hits.

Cabrera also led QU with two hits, while sophomore Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) and junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) each went 1-for-3. Alba's single homerun in the bottom of the second gave the Bobcats their 1-0 win against the Hawks.

In game two, UC Riverside took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Quinnipiac responded and narrowed the gap, 2-1, in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led off the inning as she was hit by a pitch.  After Heiberger stole second, Paolucci singled to right center, driving in Heiberger for the QU run.

The Highlanders increased their advantage, 3-1, with a Shore run in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs in the next inning, the Bobcats' Heiberger reached on a UC Riverside error, allowing senior Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) to score an unearned run. The Bobcats entered the seventh inning within one run of the Highlanders, 3-2, but were unable to come back.

Sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) earned the loss, which puts her at 3-2 on the year, after pitching four innings for QU. Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also saw action as she pitched two innings later in the contest. Combined, they struck out seven batters. Alvarez earned the win for UC Riverside.
