Farmville, Va. – The Quinnipiac University softball team opened the 2012 season as it won two contests in the first day of the Longwood Spring Classic on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Bobcats shut out Iona College, 2-0, and defeated Saint Peter's College, 14-1, in a five-inning game later in the day. The Bobcats, now 2-0 on the year, will face Iona and Saint Peter's again in the final day of the Longwood tournament on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Overall, senior Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) led the day with a team-high five RBI, each of which she contributed against Saint Peter's. Four Bobcats had three hits on the afternoon, while seven members of the QU squad scored two runs apiece. Quinnipiac also saw four Bobcats each have one stolen base on the day.
In the Bobcats' first match-up of their 2012 campaign, QU earned a 2-0 shutout against MAAC opponent, Iona College. After five innings of scoreless play, Quinnipiac scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the win.
With two outs and Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) on second base, Quinnipiac's Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) doubled to left center to drive in Barba for the first run of the game. Junior third baseman Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) then singled to first base, which brought in Kesses for the 2-0 lead. Iona was unable to put a Gael on base during the top of the seventh, which resulted in the Bobcats' first victory of the year.
Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) earned the win against Iona after pitching seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out 10 of the 26 batters she faced. The Gaels' starting pitcher, Sarah jackson, allowed three hits and struck out six batters across six innings.
In game two, Quinnipiac took an early 3-1 lead after one inning of play against Saint Peter's. The Bobcats' senior catcher Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) drove in classmate Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) on a double to left center to put QU on the scoreboard. Duffy then singled to right center, allowing Heiberger to cross home plate. After Duffy stole second, Barba singled to right center, driving in Duffy for a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first. Saint Peter's responded as Chelsea Crews scored the team's only run of the game on a fielder's choice during the bottom of the first inning.
QU went on to compile eight additional runs in the next inning. After the Bobcats tallied three runs during the top of the second, Duffy hit a grand slam to widen Quinnipiac's lead. Quinnipiac heightened its lead, 14-1, with a run in the third and two runs in the top of the fourth inning, both driven in on a Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) double.
Five Bobcats scored two runs apiece against Saint Peter's, while Barba and junior shortstop Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) each led the team with three hits in the outing. QU's Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) earned her first win of her sophomore campaign as she pitched five innings, allowing three hits and one run. Griffin took the loss for the Peahens after seeing 4.1 innings from the mound.
