FARMVILLE, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University softball team won two games in the final day of the Longwood Spring Classic on Sunday, Feb. 26. The Bobcats swept Iona with a 4-3 victory and Saint Peter’s, 11-3, in a six-inning contest. With the non-conference wins, Quinnipiac improves to 4-0 on the year.

The Bobcats were led by senior Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.), who led the team with five RBI and two homeruns on the day. Fellow senior Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.) led QU with five hits, while she and Duffy each scored a team-leading three runs. Nine Bobcats contributed at least one hit and a run for Quinnipiac in the final day of tournament play.

After shutting out Iona, 2-0, on Saturday, the Bobcats scored early in game one of Sunday’s two-game tilt. With two outs in the top of the first, sophomore Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) doubled to right field to drive in Cabrera for QU’s first run of the match-up. Iona answered a run in the bottom of the first and two in the second inning on a Katie Jannson homer.

After four innings of scoreless play, Quinnipiac took control of the lead and came back to win, 4-3. With one out in the seventh, and Paolucci and Duffy on base, Freshman Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) doubled to left center, driving in Paolucci from second. Junior Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) then singled to right center for two RBI, including Duffy’s game-winning run.

QU’s Cabrera pitched the first two innings from the mound, but senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) earned her second win of the year as she saw the last five innings. Together they stuck out six batters. Iona’s Carly Argyle received the loss after seeing six batters in the seventh.

The Bobcats took an early 5-0 lead against Saint Peter’s in game two of the day. With two outs in the first, Duffy homered to left field, driving in Cabrera and Paolucci, for three runs. After Barba walked and Kesses singled up the middle, junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) hit a triple down the right-field line for two additional runs for QU.

After the Peahens scored three runs in the top of the first, QU tallied an additional run to widen the gap, 6-3. Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) doubled and advanced on a Saint Peter’s error, which allowed junior Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) to score from second base.

Neither squad would score in the next two innings until the Bobcats added three runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Alba doubled down the left-field line. Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) then singled to center field, driving in Alba for a QU run. Later in the inning, Salgado hit a triple which brought in Figmic and Cabrera who got on base on a single. In the sixth inning, Duffy hit her second home run of the afternoon to increase the Bobcats’ lead, 11-3.

Quinnipiac’s Duffy and sophomore Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) each saw action against Saint Peter’s from inside the circle. After Duffy started and pitched two innings, Alfiere, now 2-0, entered the game in the third inning for the win as she held the Peahens to no hits for the remainder of the contest. Shelby Beaver took her second loss of the season.

The Bobcats return to action when they play a non-conference doubleheader at Manhattan on Wednesday, Feb. 29 starting at 2 p.m.
