HAMDEN, Conn. – Four members of the Quinnipiac University softball team were selected to the College Sports Madness 2012 All-Northeast Conference Preseason teams, as announced by the collegiate athletics website on Monday.

Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was named Pitcher of the Year and received first-team honors, alongside fellow teammates, junior Jacquie Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.). Junior outfielder Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) was named All-NEC second team in the website’s preseason poll.

Schwartzburg receives both honors after being named the 2011 NEC Pitcher of the Year. Last season, Schwartzburg also earned All-NEC first team and NFCA All-Region second team accolades. Schwartzburg, who has been named a captain for the upcoming season, broke the Quinnipiac single-season record for wins, as well as the university and league’s single-season record, ending the year with 22 wins and 286 strikeouts.

Paolucci led the Bobcats in 2011 with a team-high batting average of .351. After leading QU in runs (40), homeruns (15), RBI (36) and total bases (106) during her rookie campaign, Paolucci was named NEC Rookie of the Year, All-NEC first team and NEC All-Tournament. She also earned NFCA All-Region second team honors.

Ristow earned a spot on last year’s All-NEC second team after ranking second on the team with a .311 batting average. Ristow led the Bobcats with 57 hits on the year and also ranked second in RBI (23) and total bases (73), and third for QU in runs (24).

Salgado, the Bobcats’ returning centerfielder, led the team and the conference in stolen bases (18) and ranked third for QU with a .293 batting average. Salgado received the team’s Most Improved Player of the Year award at its 2011 annual banquet.

The Bobcats open the 2011-12 season when they compete at the Lancer Leadoff Classic in Longwood, Virginia. Quinnipiac plays Oakland on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11:30 a.m. to kickoff tournament play.
