CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 1-0, in the first day of the USF Under Armour Invitational. With the non-conference victory, Quinnipiac improves to 5-0 on the year.
The Bobcats’ Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) contributed a game-high two hits, while QU senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) allowed Florida Gulf Coast only one hit by Brittney Garabedian. Schwartzburg pitched seven innings and struck out seven batters in the outing.
After six scoreless innings, Bobcats freshman Nikki Barba (San Diego, Calif.) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out on the inning, Barba, sophomore Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Alba each singled. Senior Bridget Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) then reached on a fielder’s choice and Barba scored on an Eagles’ throwing error for the win.

The Bobcats return to action at the USF Tournament when they play a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, March 3. The Bobcats face Miami (Ohio) at 11:30 a.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m. at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. QU will then take on Western Michigan at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 4.
