Bobcats Welcome The Huskies
The Quinnipiac University softball team (18-11, 6-4 NEC)
will host the University of Connecticut (17-14, 6-3) in a
non-conference match-up on Wednesday, April 11 at the QU Softball
Field in Hamden, Conn. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Most
recently, the Bobcats split a pair of Northeast Conference
doubleheaders at LIU Brooklyn and Central Connecticut State over
the weekend, while the Huskies enter Wednesday’s contest on a
four-game winning streak.

Scouting UConn
Connecticut enters Wednesday at 17-14 on the year after
winning four consecutive games at home, improving their home record
to 7-0. The Huskies are also 6-9 on the year with a 4-5 mark in
neutral locations. Currently, UConn stands at 6-3 in Big East Play.
In their most recent outings, the Huskies swept Villanova in three
league contests over the weekend. Amy Vaughan leads Connecticut
with a .358 batting average, while ranking first in hits (34), RBI
(30), doubles (10) and homeruns (9). Vaughan also paces the Huskies
with a .747 slugging percentage, while Andrea Huelsenbeck posts a
team-high .413 on-base percentage. Emily O’Donnell currently
leads UConn with 30 runs scored while batting .337 on the year.
Marissa Guches has been a consistent member of the Huskies’
squad, holding the team’s second-leading batting average
(.340). Kiki Saveriano has led Connecticut from within the circle
as she posts a team-high 11 wins, 80 strikeouts and a 2.73 ERA in
19 appearances.
All-Time Against The Huskies
Quinnipiac holds an all-time record of 4-15 with
Connecticut. Last season, the Bobcats defeated the Huskies, 7-3, on
UConn’s home turf on March 31, 2011. Overall, six different
Bobcats scored runs against the Huskies, while seven QU batters
contributed at least one hit in the outing. Heather Schwartzburg
picked up the win as she pitched six innings, posting six
strikeouts and allowing only one earned run.
Last Time Out
In their most recent outings, the Bobcats split a NEC
doubleheader at Central Connecticut State on Saturday, April 7.
Quinnipiac earned a 3-2 victory and game one, but lost, 4-2, in the
second contest of the day. Senior Heather Schwartzburg picked up
the win after pitching a complete game, scattering five hits and
striking out seven batters. Junior Jacquie Ristow batted a
team-high .429 (3-for-7) on the afternoon, also compiling three RBI
and a run scored with a .857 slugging percentage. She also hit her
first homer of the 2012 season. Senior Christy Cabrera led the
Bobcats with two runs scored.
A Look At Friday’s Twinbill At LIU
The Bobcats split a pair of NEC games at LIU Brooklyn on
Saturday, April 6. After falling to the Blackbirds, 5-4, Quinnipiac
came back and won, 13-4, later in the day. Starting pitcher Heather
Schwartzburg saw seven innings from within the circle, striking out
six batters for the win. Freshman Nikki Barba paced QU with a .500
batting average, compiling a team-leading four hits with three RBI
and two runs scored. Senior Mina Duffy and junior Alex Alba each
launched home runs. Overall, the Bobcats outhit the Blackbirds,
18-to-14, while collecting 14 RBI and 17 runs scored overall.
Heating Up At Home
The Bobcats are currently undefeated at home, boasting a
3-0 record at the QU Softball Field this season. Quinnipiac opened
play in Hamden, Conn. with a sweep of NEC foe Sacred Heart, 12-7
and 5-4, on April 1. The Bobcats followed the wins with a 2-0
non-conference victory against Fairfield on April 4. QU looks to
build on this success with three straight home games against UConn
and Wagner this week.
RPI Rankings
Quinnipiac moved ahead to 119th in the NCAA
Softball RPI Rankings, after standing in the 121st slot
last week. The Bobcats now leads all Northeast Conference schools
in the rankings.
Schwartzburg’s Success
Senior Heather Schwartzburg continues to lead the Bobcats
from within this circle, posting a team and conference leading 1.40
ERA, which also ranks 25th in the country. Schwartzburg
also leads Quinnipiac and stands fifth in the NEC in innings
pitched (104.2), fourth in batters struck out (119) and wins (11),
and second in opposing batting average (.179). She also ranks
20th in the NCAA standings in hits allowed per seven
innings (4.35).
Alba Leads The Bobcats
Junior Alex Alba leads the Bobcats with a .361 batting
average, while ranking fourth in the NEC standings in slugging
percentage (.602). Alba continues to place in the NCAA rankings in
toughest to strike out, currently standing 41st.
Leading Ladies
QU senior Mina Duffy paces the Bobcats with 22 RBI and six
homeruns, while fellow classmate Christy Cabrera has scored a
team-high 18 runs on the year. In addition to ranking first for the
Bobcats in batting average and slugging percentage, junior Alex
Alba leads QU with a .393 on-base percentage, nine doubles and 50
total bases.
Walk This Way
Christy Cabrera has been walked 13 times this season, the
most of any members of the QU squad, helping the senior post a .371
on-base percentage.
Homerun Hitters
Quinnipiac has compiled 17 homeruns throughout the year,
led by senior Mina Duffy’s six homers. The Bobcats matched
the NCAA consecutive homerun record as they put together four
straight homers in their NEC victory over Sacred Heart on April
1.
Fielding Facts
The Bobcats boast the highest fielding percentage in the
Northeast Conference at .975, which also ranks in the top-25 in the
NCAA standings. Quinnipiac has only made 21 errors in 29 games,
while its opponents have made 40 errors this year.
Success In Stolen Bases
Quinnipiac ranks third in the NEC in stolen bases, as
it’s been successful on 24-of-28 stolen base attempts this
season, while its opponents have recorded 12 stolen bases on the
year. The Bobcats’ efforts are led by junior Lauren
Salgado’s perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases, while 10 Bobcats
in total have posted at least one during 2012.
What’s Ahead For QU
The Bobcats return to action when they host Wagner in a
league doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 with the first game
scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the QU Softball Field in Hamden,
Conn. QU then travels for a NEC twinbill at Fairleigh Dickinson on
Sunday, April 15 at Noon.
