Softball Defeats North Florida, Winthrop At USF The Game Tournament
Clearwater, Fla. - The Quinnipiac University softball team won two
games at the opening day of the USF The Game Tournament on Friday,
March 18 in Clearwater, Fla. The Bobcats shut out both opponents,
with a 2-0 victory against North Florida and a 6-0 win against
Winthrop.
In the Bobcats' first outing of the day, junior Heather
Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) picked up her sixth win of
the season. The right-handed pitcher struck out 11 batters and
allowed only two hits across seven scoreless innings against North
Florida.
Quinnipiac took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With
the bases loaded, Quinnipiac catcher Ashley
Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was hit by a pitch, allowing Alex
Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) to score. In the second inning, the
Bobcats' hit three-consecutive singles. Infielder Jacqueline
Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) singled to center field, driving in
sophomore outfielder Lauren
Salgado (Covina, Calif.) for Quinnipiac's second and final run
of the game.
Salgado led the Bobcats as she went 3-3 with a run scored, while
Christy
Cabrera (Reno, Nev.), Ristow and Alba each contributed a hit
against the North Florida Ospreys.
Junior Mina
Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) won her first career complete-game
against Winthrop in the Bobcats' second match-up on Friday. Duffy
allowed two hits and struck out 12 batters. Despite a 6-0 victory,
Quinnipiac shortstop Cabrera contributed the only hit in the game
for the Bobcats.
Cabrera led Quinnipiac, as she went 1-3 with two runs scored.
Ristow and Alex
Murray (Milford, Mass.) each added a Quinnipiac run and were
walked twice by the Eagles pitcher, while Alba and Salgado each
scored a run and were walked once.
Stats for the Winthrop game will be available at a later time.
The Bobcats continue tournament play on Saturday as they take on
Dartmouth at 3 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast at 5:30 p.m.
