Quinnipiac Softball Splits Two Games In Second Day Of Under Armour Showcase
Clearwater, Fla. - The Quinnipiac University softball team (8-9)
split two games in its second day of the Under Armour Showcase at
the University of South Florida. The Bobcats lost, 8-5, against
Saint Joseph's and shutout Ball State, 4-0.
In the Bobcats' third game of the tournament, St. Joseph's took a
2-0 lead early in the top of the first. Quinnipiac answered with
four runs in the second inning, Jordan
Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) scored the Bobcats' first run of the
game as Lauren
Salgado (Covina, Calif.) walked. Christy
Cabrera (Reno, Nev.) reached first base on a St. Joe's error,
driving in Joelle
Jacobsen (Flemington, N.J.) and Bridget
Figmic (Stratford, Conn.). Salgado scored the last run of the
inning as Alex
Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) singled to center field.
St. Joseph's took back a 7-4 advantage in the third inning, as the
team scored five runs. Quinnipiac's Figmic doubled up the middle,
driving in Ashley
Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.), for a Bobcats run in the bottom
of the third. The Hawks added the final run of the game in the
fifth as Parks singled to left field, allowing Stinner to score and
increase St. Joseph's lead by three points, 8-5.
Freshman pitcher Katie
Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) took the loss for Quinnipiac,
while junior Mina
Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) closed the game. Quinnipiac
right-fielder Kim
Brzezinski (Tinley Park, Ill.) went 3-4, while Cabrera drove in
two runs for the Bobcats.
In Quinnipiac's 4-0 win against Ball State, junior pitcher Heather
Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) picked up her fourth
victory of the season, as she struck out 11 batters in seven
innings for the Bobcats. Cabrera went 2-4 and led the Bobcats with
two runs scored and an RBI.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Cabrera scored
the first run of the game on a Ball State throwing error.
Quinnipiac added two runs in the fifth as Jacobsen and Cabrera each
scored one run. In the sixth inning, Cabrera singled to third base,
driving in Heiberger for the Bobcats' fourth run.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it plays two games on Sunday,
March 13, in the final day of the Under Armour Showcase. The
Bobcats face Maryland at 12 p.m. and the Netherlands National Team
at 2:30 p.m.
