Quinnipiac Softball Splits Two Games In First Day Of Longwood Classic
FARMVILLE, Va. - The Quinnipiac University softball team split two
games in the first day of the Longwood Classic on Saturday, Feb.
26. The Bobcats, now 2-4 on the year, defeated Bucknell, 5-4, in
extra innings, and lost to host Longwood, 5-4.
The Bobcats faced Bucknell (1-6) in their first match-up of the
tournament. The Bison scored all four runs in the second inning.
Kasey Segiel scored the first run of the game, which was followed
by an Elyse Colmenero double to right center, which drove in three
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats' Bridget
Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) doubled to left field, driving in Ashley
Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Jordan
Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.). Quinnipiac came back to tie
Bucknell, 2-2, in the sixth inning. Jacqueline
Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored on a Heiberger triple, which
was followed by another Figmic double to drive in Heiberger. The
Bobcats went on to win the contest in the seventh inning, 5-4, as
Salgado scored on a wild pitch.
Ristow led Quinnipiac with three hits, adding a run, while
Heiberger contributed two hits, scored two runs, and picked up a
RBI. Figmic led all Bobcats in RBIs, driving in three runs. In
addition, junior pitcher Heather
Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) earned her first win of
the season while pitching 7 and 1/3 innings. She only allowed
four hits and struck out four batters in the win.
Quinnipiac lost to Longwood, 5-4, in the second game of the day.
Salgado went 3-3, while Kim
Brzezinski (Tinley Park, Ill.) led all Bobcats with two RBIs.
Four Bobcats contributed one hit and one run in the outing.
Freshman pitcher Emily
O'Keefe (Southington, Conn.) took the loss, pitching six
innings for Quinnipiac.
The Lancers scored four runs in the second inning, while the
Bobcats scored each of their runs in the fourth inning. Brzezinski
hit a double during the fourth, driving in Paolucci and Heiberger.
Senior captain Joelle
Jacobsen (Flemington, N.J.) followed with a single to left
field, also picking up an RBI on the play. Quinnipiac's final run
was scored by Jacobsen, on a Salgado walk.
Longwood's Brooke Short scored the winning run in the fifth inning
after hitting a triple to right center and scoring on a fielding
Quinnipiac returns to action at the Longwood Classic on Sunday,
Feb. 27. The Bobcats will play Stony Brook at 9 a.m. and Bucknell
at 11 a.m.
