Softball Falls At Stony Brook, 2-0 And 4-3
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Stony Brook on Wednesday, April 27 at University Field. The Bobcats fell, 2-0, in game one and 4-3, in an eight-inning contest later that evening. Quinnipiac drops to 27-22 on the year, while Stony Brook improves to 17-24 overall.
In game one, Stony Brook scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs on the inning, Jessica Combs singled to left center, driving in Nicole Schieferstein to put the Seawolves on the scoreboard. Stony Brook added its second run in the sixth inning. Suzanne Karath led off with a double to left center and advanced to third base on a Gina Bianculli sacrifice bunt. She was then driven in as Shannon O'Shea reached on a fielder's choice.
Freshman hurler Katie Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) took the loss as she pitched six innings for the Bobcats. Sophomores Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) and Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) each recorded Quinnipiac's only hits of the game.
In the second match-up, the Bobcats answered with game's first run in the top of the first inning. After Christy Cabrera (Reno, Nev.) was walked, Alex Murray (Milford, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice. Murray then advanced to third base as Alba reached on a fielder's choice and freshman Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) was then hit by a pitch. With one out on the inning, Kim Brzezinski (Tinley Park, Ill.) drove in Murray as she flied out to center field.
Stony Brook responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead over Quinnipiac. The Seawolves scored three runs on four hits and ended the inning with two runners left on base.
In the top of the fifth, Quinnipiac rallied and came back to tie the game at three runs apiece when Paolucci hit a two-run homer to center field, with two outs on the inning. Paolucci's home run was her 12th of her freshman season.
After seven innings of play, the game was tied at 3-3, and was forced into extra innings. After Stony Brook held Quinnipiac to a scoreless half-inning in the top of the eighth, the Seawolves Bianculli singled through the left side to drive in Karath for the game-winning run.
Junior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded the loss as she entered the game in the bottom of the second and pitched 5.2 innings for Quinnipiac. Schwartzburg struck out seven strike outs and allowed one run. Freshman Emily O'Keefe (Southington, Conn.) started the game for the Bobcats and picked up two strikeouts across 1.2 innings.
Outfielder Kortney Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) went 2-for-3 in game two, while Paolucci went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Brzezinski also went 1-for-3 and drove in one run for the Bobcats, while Murray scored two runs for Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to play its final Northeast Conference games of the 2011 regular season at Robert Morris and Saint Francis (Pa.) this weekend. The Bobcats will face Robert Morris in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 at the North Athletic Complex in Moon Township, Pa., prior to playing Saint Francis (Pa.) in a pair of games on Sunday, May 1 at Red Flash Field in Loretto, Pa. Saturday's twinbill will begin at 1 p.m., while Sunday's contests are scheduled for a noon start.
