Softball Falls To Fairfield, 7-1FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) broke up the no-hit effort with a single that resulted in the lone run of the game as the Quinnipiac University softball team lost to Fairfield University, 7-1, Thursday afternoon. Senior Emily Bellush (Newton, Mass.) recorded the sole RBI on the day as the Bobcats drop to 15-16 on the season. With the win, the Stags improve to 13-13 on the year.
The Stags scored split their scoring between their first and last at bat of the day, tallying four runs in the bottom of the first, and three more in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Kristina Lingo led the team in the first inning, as she hit a two-run triple into right field while batting clean-up. Allison Wigand and Laura Carta drove in the other two runs of the inning, taking a 4-0 lead heading into the second inning.
One hit for Fairfield and one walk for Quinnipiac were the only offensive happenings through the next 4.5 innings, before the Stags scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The three runs crossed on a homerun by senior Jenna DiBernardo in the third at bat of the inning, boosting their lead to seven runs.
Alba broke up the no-hit effort by junior RHP Sarah Minice with two outs on the board in the top of the seventh inning. The freshman's single dropped into right field where she was pinch-run for by fellow freshman Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.). Bellush stepped to the plate next, where she smacked her first double of the season and Salgado sprinted around the bases to score from first to pick up the lone Bobcat run of the game.
Junior Jaimie Iaquinto (Dix Hills, N.Y.) started the game for Quinnipiac before sophomore Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) came in for 4.1 innings of relief. Schwartzburg allowed just one hit in the effort, while striking out three. Bellush closed out the game from the circle for the Bobcats, and pitched the final inning. Minice struck out ten batters in the complete game for Fairfield.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend when they host back-to-back Northeast Conference doubleheaders at the Quinnipiac Softball Field. Quinnipiac will host Robert Morris on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a 12 p.m. start with St. Francis (PA) on Sunday.
