Softball Drops Doubleheader At Long IslandBROOKLYN, N.Y. - Senior third baseman Kelly Wall (Westport, Conn.) scored the team's lone run of the day as the Quinnipiac University softball team lost both games in a conference doubleheader with Long Island University this afternoon. The Bobcats lost the first game, 10-0, before playing to a 3-1 loss in the second game of the day as their record drops to 11-15 on the year with an 0-2 mark in Northeast Conference play. The Blackbirds' record improves to 16-12 overall with a 4-0 record in conference play.
The Bobcats saw a rough start to the day against the reigning NEC Champions. Freshman Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) saw the only Quinnipiac hit in game one when she hit a bunt single in the top of the fifth inning. She was called out on the next play when the following batter lined out to the first baseman for a Blackbirds' double play. The Bobcats saw just one other base runner in the first game, as senior Angela Casella (Oceanside, N.Y.) reached when she was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning.
Long Island scored the majority of their runs in the first and second inning, scoring three in the first and four in the second. Senior outfielder Chelsea Martinson led the Blackbirds offensively, as she went 2 for 4 from the plate with a three-run homerun and an RBI double in game one. Only three other players garnered hits for Long Island in the five-inning game, but the team collectively drew nine walks.
Senior Emily Bellush (Newton, Mass.) started the first game for the Bobcats, giving up four earned runs on four hits in two innings pitched. Junior Jaimie Iaquinto (Dix Hills, N.Y.) came in for two relief innings and earned three runs on one hit. Bellush struck out one batter in the game, while Iaquinto struck out two. Long Island senior, Blaire Porter, pitched the complete game recording her 13th win of the season.
The Blackbirds scored all three runs in the bottom of the first in game two of the day. Senior second baseman Brynn Lewis scored the first run in the game when she tripled to left field in the second at bat. She scored the second run in the following play when she was driven home on a Martinson single through the left side. Martinson scored the final run of the game two plays later on a Ravlene Asman single into center. The Blackbirds were allowed just two more hits after the first inning, and earned three more base runners.
The bats of Quinnipiac were livelier in game two as they tallied five hits against Porter, who pitched the complete second game as well. Wall crossed the plate for the lone Bobcat run of the day in the top of the fifth inning, when she started the offense with a single up the middle. The hit was followed by a sacrifice bunt by senior Kim Le Bel (Quincy, Mass.), advancing Wall to second before she stole third with one out on the board. Freshman Jacquie Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) batted Wall home on a ground out to second base to make the score 3-1.
Sophomore Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) pitched the complete game for Quinnipiac in game two, earning three runs on eight hits. Schwartzburg struck out seven batters on the day. Porter struck out four in the win for Long Island, earning one run on five hits allowed.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, Mar. 30, when they travel to take on Connecticut for the second time this season. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Burrill Family Field in Storrs.
